South Suburban Senior Housing is one of six properties acquired by POAH from the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago in 2019. This acquisition expanded POAH’s footprint in Chicago into three new communities plus the suburb of Harvey, and preserved 461 affordable apartments for low-income seniors for many years to come.

South Suburban first opened its doors to seniors and disabled residents in 1946 with 50 one-bedroom apartments and added another 70 units in 1982.

South Suburban is located in Harvey a suburb to the south of Chicago that has suffered from prolonged disinvestment compounded by isolation the region’s economic engines. However, it is a location with potential – one block from the Harvey Metra rail station and less than 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. It is within walking distance of the nationally recognized Ingalls Memorial Hospital and the Harvey Public Library, which recently underwent a $4.7M renovation and expansion project.

In 2023 POAH completed renovations to all 120 apartments, upgraded major building systems and redesigned the first-floor community spaces and management offices. The project received financial support from the Illinois Housing Development Authority and Cook County. POAH also extended the HAP contract for all 120 units. Amenities include on-site laundry facilities, a game room, community room, playground and fitness center.
