ABC 7 News Washington story
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) broke ground Monday on a project dedicated to restoring a beloved community to many longtime residents.
Groundbreaking of The Asberry marks the first on-site building delivered at Barry Farm under the New Communities Initiative, a program that dates back to Mayor Anthony Williams' Administration and is designed to revitalize severely distressed subsidized housing and redevelop neighborhoods into vibrant mixed-income communities.
The project is beginning the first phase of redevelopment and will be completed in early 2024. It is also historically significant for African Americans in the District.
