Congressman Keating, MassHousing director, legislators and HUD branch chief celebrate renovations of Wareham affordable housing development

October 19, 2017

WAREHAM, MA - Congressman Bill Keating (MA-9) and MassHousing Executive Director Tim Sullivan joined local legislators, town officials, the HUD Branch Chief and developer Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH) to announce the completion of renovations at Brandy Hill Apartments, a 132-unit affordable housing community East Wareham.

POAH originally acquired this at-risk housing development in June 2010 to assure it would be preserved as affordable housing for many years to come. In October 2016, POAH secured the necessary financing from several partners to complete an $8.6 million rehabilitation of the property.

“Safe, stable housing provides the foundation for so many other things in our lives, including health, education, and job security,” said Congressman Keating. “I thank Preservation of Affordable Housing for their work developing the Brandy Hill Apartments to provide housing certainty for the people in my area who need our help.”

Upgrades include new siding for all 12 buildings; roof replacement at five buildings; the addition of seven handicap-adapted apartments; new gas heating systems for all apartments; the  completion of kitchen, flooring, and bathroom upgrades to more than 50 apartments; interior common area upgrades; new fire safety systems in all buildings and apartments; and a new fully-adapted playground.

The rehabilitation of Brandy Hill Apartments was made possible by financing partners, including the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, MassHousing, Citizens Bank, and Stratford Capital Group of Peabody, Mass.

“HUD is proud to join POAH, MassHousing and all of the partners in helping to preserve this much needed affordable housing in East Wareham,” said David Tille, HUD New England Regional Administrator.

“We were very pleased to partner with POAH over a nearly 10-year period so they could first acquire, and then renovate and extend the affordability at the Brandy Hill Apartments,” said MassHousing Executive Director Tim Sullivan. “POAH’s commitment to continued affordability at Brandy Hill was a great outcome for the residents and this community is going to be an important affordable housing resource in Wareham for many years to come.’’

“By providing these important financing resources our partners are ensuring that this property will be financially stable well into the future, said POAH President/CEO Aaron Gornstein. “We could not have done this remarkable renovation without them.”

Attending the event were:

Tim Sullivan, Executive Director, MassHousing

State Senator Marc Pacheco

State Rep. Williams Gifford

Maurice Barry, Branch Chief, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
