Hundreds of supporters, including community partners, residents and local and federal elected officials, came to the ribbon cutting of Woodlawn Center South to celebrate the announcement of the first ever HUD Choice Neighborhood Initiative Grant to POAH and partner City of Chicago.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, local officials and supporters celebrate grand opening of Temple Landing in New Bedford, MA

Temple Landing (formerly United Front Homes) is a 173-unit family housing development located five blocks west of City Hall in downtown New Bedford. Temple Landing preserves affordable housing for low income and working families in the major gateway city in southeastern Massachusetts.

Torrey Woods Apartments Grand Opening in Weymouth, MA

Weymouth Mayor Susan Kay (center photo) cuts the ribbon at Torrey Woods, a 20 unit affordable housing development in Weymouth for working families and seniors. It was developed as a collaboration with South Suburban Affordable Housing, Inc. in an effort to provide more affordable housing to the Town of Weymouth and the greater community and contains 5 one bedroom units and 15 two bedroom units. The project incorporates numerous energy efficient strategies.

Solar Panels Saving Energy at Salem Fairweather Apartments

Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard K. Sullivan, Jr. (third from left in first photo) and Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll (center photo) joined Preservation of Affordable Housing President Amy Anthony (on right in third photo) and residents of the Salem Fairweather affordable housing apartments at a celebration of three new solar panels installed behind the 127-unit community on Highland Avenue.  The photovoltaic panels were installed earlier this year and are already yielding renewable, clean energy savings.

Sugar River Mills receives $50,000 for energy efficiency improvements

POAH staff Carlota Melo, Patricia Belden and Charles Dirac accept a $50,000 “Housing for Everyone” grant award from the TD Charitable Foundation to make “greening” improvements at the Sugar River Mills affordable housing apartments in Claremont, NH..  Jeffrey P. Seifert, TD Bank Regional Vice President of Commercial Lending, (third from left) presented the check at the Manchester TD Bank office Nov. 18. The grant competition supports capital improvements to affordable housing units through upgrades to property conditions and increased energy efficiency measures.

Congressman Neal visits Oktoberfest at Dom Narowdy Polski in Chicopee

Congressman Richard Neal (D-MA) and Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonette visited with the residents of the Dom Narodowy Polski apartment community during the Oct. 25 Oktoberfest. Neal told the group that the affordable housing apartments are a reminder of the partnership that exists between Washington and local communities. At a time of political contention, “there’s plenty of room as members of the American family to argue about everything, however we all ought to agree that in a nation that has been blessed with the bounty we have, everybody ought to have enough to eat and shelter.”

Meadowbrook celebrates reopening of Building 21

Residents of the Meadowbrook Apartments in Florence, MA celebrated the reopening of Building 21 at an end of the summer barbecue celebration Aug. 26. Northampton Mayor Clare Higgins joined POAH President Amy S. Anthony at the podium to thank all who had helped with the rebuilding. Building #21 was destroyed by an accidental fire on April 13, 2009 and rebuilt by POAH from November through July of this year. It contains 12 units with 4 handicapped accessible units, the newest of which is fully ADA compliant.
